Rush

I was brought up in a strict evangelical Christian family. Rock music was the music of Satan so I was shielded from it as much as possible (I’m an Atheist now, I wonder why?). During my early teens I developed a love of Rock but had to listen to it in secret, away from the condescending ears of my parents. One method was to listen to the Friday Rock Show with the wonderful Tommy Vance which introduced me to all sorts of incredible music. It was on this show that I first heard Rush!

There used to be a section on the show named, “Lay Back and Enjoy It” in which a listener would send in three or four tracks, sometimes with a theme, that Tommy would play back to back without interruption. One particular week he played “Parallels” by Yes, “Limelight” by Rush, “Rocky Paths” by Hawkwind and “Hunting Girl” by Jethro Tull. Now, I loved every single track but it was “Limelight” that I couldn’t stop listening to. After doing some research I figured that here was a band that probably wouldn’t offend my parents too much (even if they did find my secret vinyl LP stash) and so off I went to buy a couple of LP’s. I settled on getting “A Farewell to Kings” and “Moving Pictures”. From then on – I was hooked.
