Alex Lifeson

Alex is the founder member of the band. A superbly skilled guitarist he can also play a host of other stringed instruments as well as occasional keyboard and bass pedals on stage. Although not to the extent that Geddy does. Now drums and bass, in most groups, are considered as solely rhythm instruments. Not in Rush, both drums and bass are lead instruments as well as rhythm. Now the guitar is usually considered a lead instrument. Now, Alex’s playing, although mainly leading, can also be considered to be just as much part of the rhythm section as the drums and bass are. It’s one of the things I love about Rush. Forget anything you’ve ever heard about how good The Edge apparently is – Alex Lifeson is where the real playing can be found.

Frequently seen playing a twin neck with a twelve string on top and a six string underneath, Alex’s playing is unique and instantly recognisable.

My favourite solo of his isn’t actually on any Rush albums. It’s in the track Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree. Alex guest solos on it and it’s really easy to recognise it as Alex. He plays his solos so beautifully and sympathetically with each track he features in. Such a wonderful player!

I think Alex is my favourite guitarist of all time. Even more so than Hendrix or Angus Young. My favourite Rush solo of his is on the track Limelight. There is such scope and variety to his skill. Innovative as well as bold and emotional. He has featured in many other bands as well as Rush, and has his own album out by the name of “Victor“.

He has been guest guitarist for many different bands as well as Porcupine Tree and also composed the theme to the TV sci-fi series Andromeda. Described by James Hetfield as the best rhythm guitarist in the world he is (admittedly in my very humble opinion as a non player) the greatest guitarist of any kind.
